New Year, new EU presidency but also new Member States, new official languages, new Commissioners, new € coins... we knew this was bound to happen since we do live in a constantly enlarging empire whose membership now stands at 27.
As if CS, DA, DE, ET, EL, EN, ES, FI, FR, HU, IT, LV, LT, MT, NL, PL, PT, SK, SL and SV weren’t enough, BG, GA and RO have joined the club of official languages. You should know that, in a Europe which will always be multilingual, learning languages opens doors. Just imagine you could become a translator or an interpreter and start learning as many as possible of the aforementioned 23. Do not omit Catalan, Basque and Galician that have already been granted semi-official status and could soon be included...
But there is more to it than the possibility of getting hold of a better job. The language a person speaks is part of their identity and their culture. So learning languages means understanding other people and their way of thinking. It means opposing racism, xenophobia and intolerance and therefore enjoying living in this wonderful "melting pot" also known as European Union.
Don’t you feel like saying "EU go brách" ?

First!!! Yay!
I'm still struggling to learn English after all these years in this country.
It's a stupid language.
The bestest county in the world,
a place yer couldn't hide,
That's why we hold our heads up,'n' they're so full o' pride.
There's a fact yer can't deny,
it's written in our plan,
Yer can tek the man out o' Yorkshire, but yer can't tek Yorkshire out o' t' man!
Deary me, I'm struggling to learn this one! I'm sure you will agree with me, it's a beautiful language, innit Kissme?
Did that last phrase mean "Europa going to break?" And what language is GA? I think we (in Brussels at least) will end up speaking a bastardized Eurospeak mish-mash of bad English, bad French, bad Spanish etc.etc.
Aw Daffers, you are too good... thanks for the break and the laugh I really needed.
EU for ever, in Gaelic, Irish gaelic, the latest official language (will Scotland and Wales rise?). Anyway, as EU keeps enlarging, it is probably going to break at some point...
God verdom, du stoemp à l'Eurospeak?! Alleï une fois, Daphnéïe! Viens pas m'dire qu'on va bientôt oublier le Brusseler... Non peut-être?
Scotland would rise but our offical language (i.e Gaelic) died with William Wallace. And please don't get me started on how much I hate learning French. . .but I do appreciate that needs must.
Yorkshire is indeed God's own country.
Home rule for Yorkshire.......
DQ, don't get me started on my visit to Scotland and the day I watched Braveheart... too many wonderful memories to tell. Needs must? OK then, you'll receive more homework tomorrow.
Brave Kissme, I won't argue with that statement of yours, you must know better...
